A Sound Life Trauma-Aware Yoga Teacher Training

Why this training exists

The body’s alarm system turns on and then never quite turns off.

In any class, a yoga teacher can stand in front of someone whose nervous system is still bracing for something experienced long ago. Most teachers were never taught what to do next. This is the training that gives you the language, skills and support to hold space in a trauma-aware way.

Whether you want to understand trauma more deeply, find new places to teach, or simply become the best teacher you can be, this training is designed to help you grow. In this training, you’ll:

  • Deepen your expertise: understand trauma, the nervous system, and how our experiences shape the way we respond to the world.
  • Teach with greater confidence: learn practical techniques to create safe, supportive and inclusive yoga classes.
  • Expand your teaching skills: adapt your approach for students with diverse physical, emotional and psychological needs.
  • Open doors to new opportunities: build skills for teaching in community, healthcare and specialised wellbeing settings.

And you won’t be doing it alone. You’ll be guided and mentored by experienced teachers who know both the rewards and the challenges of teaching in diverse community settings.

Built from real-world experience

This course is grounded in A Sound Life’s experience delivering trauma-aware wellbeing programs in hospitals, disability services, aged care homes and community settings across Australia. It brings what we’ve learned working with real people, in real environments, into practical training for yoga teachers.

You’ll explore what trauma-aware teaching looks like beyond theory: how language can shape the experience of a class, why choice matters, how to respond when familiar cues aren’t appropriate, and how to create spaces that support greater safety, agency and connection.

We built the training we wish we’d had when we started. It brings together practical tools, guidance and experience designed to help yoga teachers take trauma-aware principles off the page and into the room.

What you’ll learn

A participant resting one hand on his heart and one on his belly during a breathing practice

Understand trauma responses

Learn to recognise hyperarousal and hypoarousal in real time, and respond to each appropriately, not just in theory, but with the specific breath techniques and pacing choices that actually work in a class.

Teach with consent & care

Master trauma-aware, consent-based cueing that gives every participant genuine choice throughout a class, not just at the start, built from language that’s already been used and refined in real community settings.

Real-world teaching experience

You won’t just get a certificate, you’ll get real teaching experience, with support at every step. Start by shadowing an experienced teacher, then co-teach, then lead your own sessions, five in total, with a mentor guiding you throughout. By the end, you’ve actually taught, not just studied.
